Thermogenic Ingredients Explained: Green Tea, Cayenne & Metabolic Rate

"Thermogenic" is one of those words that shows up on half the supplement labels in the weight-management aisle, usually without much explanation of what it actually means or how much of a difference it realistically makes. It's a real physiological process, with real (if modest) research behind a handful of specific compounds — it's just routinely oversold. Here's the mechanism, the evidence, and a level-headed read on where it fits.

What thermogenesis actually is

Thermogenesis is the process of generating heat in the body, which requires burning energy. Your body is thermogenic constantly, at rest, just to maintain core temperature — that's part of your basal metabolic rate. Certain compounds can modestly increase this energy expenditure above baseline, a phenomenon researchers call diet-induced thermogenesis when it's triggered by something you eat or drink. NCCIH's assessment of green tea's usefulness and safety is the sober counterweight to most thermogenic marketing, and it also notes interactions with certain prescription medicines.

The key word is modest. Thermogenic ingredients aren't a mechanism for burning large amounts of stored fat quickly — the measurable effects in research are typically a small percentage increase in energy expenditure over a period of hours, not a dramatic metabolic overhaul.

Capsaicin: the compound behind cayenne pepper

Capsaicin is the compound responsible for chili peppers' heat, and it's one of the more studied thermogenic compounds. It's believed to activate a receptor (TRPV1) that plays a role in energy expenditure and fat oxidation.

Green tea's thermogenic effect works through a different pathway than capsaicin. The catechins in green tea — particularly EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) — are believed to inhibit an enzyme that breaks down norepinephrine, a hormone involved in fat breakdown and thermogenesis. By slowing that breakdown, norepinephrine's effects may be prolonged.

Green tea also naturally contains caffeine, which independently has well-documented thermogenic and lipolytic (fat-breakdown) effects. Most green tea extract research studies the catechin-caffeine combination together rather than isolating catechins alone, which makes it hard to fully separate the two effects — worth knowing if you're specifically trying to minimize caffeine intake.

Extracts are commonly standardized by polyphenol and catechin percentage — you'll see labels listing something like "98% polyphenols, 50% EGCG" — which tells you the concentration of the standardized extract rather than a specific dose of any single compound.

How much of a real-world difference does this make?

Meta-analyses of thermogenic compounds — capsaicinoids and catechins included — generally find statistically real but practically modest effects: often in the range of a small percentage increase in daily energy expenditure. To put that in perspective, that's roughly comparable to the energy cost of a short walk, not a substitute for one.

It does mean nobody should expect a thermogenic ingredient to noticeably change the scale on its own, especially in the short term.

Timing and stacking considerations

Because both capsaicin and caffeine-containing catechins have a relatively short half-life in the body, their thermogenic effect is most pronounced in the hours immediately after ingestion. Some research protocols dose thermogenic compounds before meals or before exercise specifically to align the (modest) energy-expenditure boost with a period of higher food intake or activity. Safety notes

Capsaicin can cause gastrointestinal discomfort in sensitive individuals, particularly at higher doses or on an empty stomach. Green tea extract, because of its caffeine content, can contribute to jitteriness, sleep disruption if taken late in the day, or interact with stimulant sensitivity. Very high-dose green tea extract has also been associated in rare case reports with liver stress, which is part of why moderate, standardized doses — rather than mega-doses — are the more common and better-studied approach in commercial formulas.
